Interim Therapeutic Restorations

An Interim Therapeutic Restoration (ITR) is a temporary filling that can be used to protect a tooth and slow the progression of a cavity until more definitive treatment can be completed.

ITRs can be especially helpful for young children, children who are still becoming comfortable with dental treatment, or situations where completing a traditional restoration is not the best option at that time. The cavity is gently cleaned, and a tooth-colored restorative material is placed to seal and protect the tooth.

At Little Roots, we’ll monitor the restoration and your child’s tooth over time. Because an ITR is intended to be temporary, we’ll let you know if and when additional treatment is recommended as your child grows and their needs change.

This page describes clinical care in general terms and is written for parents. It is not advice about your individual child.
