Individualized care

Individualized Care

Providing a safe and customized oral health environment, with preventive care tailored to each child’s individual caries-risk and periodontal disease-risk assessment rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Why individualized care matters at Little Roots

Every child who walks through our doors is different. Their age, personality, comfort level, medical and dental history, development, experiences, family, and risk for oral disease all shape what good dental care looks like for them.

At Little Roots, we meet your child where they are. We take the time to understand their individual needs and thoughtfully tailor each visit — from how we introduce the dental environment to the preventive care and treatment we recommend.

Individualized care also means recommendations are based on your child’s actual needs and risks. We use tools such as caries-risk assessment to understand your child’s risk for developing cavities and build a preventive plan around them. As your child grows and their needs change, their care grows with them.

Our goal is not to make every child’s dental experience look the same. It’s to help each child feel safe, supported, and confident while receiving the care that is right for them.

Individualized care at Little Roots

Every child is different

Some children are excited to climb into the dental chair. Others need more time to watch, ask questions, or become comfortable in a new environment. Some children communicate differently, have sensory preferences, live with complex medical conditions, or have had previous experiences that shape how they feel about dental care.

We see those differences as an important part of caring for your child.

We adjust our approach to your child’s age, development, personality, comfort, and individual needs. Sometimes that means slowing down. Sometimes it means explaining more, showing less, changing how we communicate, or accomplishing only what your child is ready for that day. Building trust is part of the care we provide.

Care based on your child’s risk

Individualized care extends beyond how we make your child comfortable. It also guides the clinical decisions we make. Every child has their own risk for developing cavities and other oral health concerns. At Little Roots, caries-risk assessment helps us understand those risks and tailor prevention accordingly. A child at low risk may need a different combination of services and visit frequency than a child at moderate or high risk.

Risk can also change. Diet, oral hygiene, medications, medical conditions, orthodontic treatment, development, and other factors can influence your child’s oral health over time. We continue to reassess those needs as your child grows so their care can change with them.

Parents are part of the team

You know your child better than anyone. We want to know what makes them comfortable, what worries them, how they communicate, what has worked well in the past, and what you want us to know before we begin.

Parents are welcome to be part of their child’s visits, ask questions, and participate in decisions about their care. We’ll explain what we see, what we recommend, the options available, and why — so we can make thoughtful decisions together.

Where individualized care meets the rest of our care

Personalize. Prevent. Preserve. These principles guide how we care for every child at Little Roots. We start by understanding the child in front of us, use that understanding to build an individualized approach to prevention, and when treatment is needed, choose thoughtful options that preserve healthy tooth structure whenever possible.

The details may look different for every child, but the goal remains the same: helping your child build a healthy relationship with their oral health that can grow with them.

This page describes clinical care in general terms and is written for parents. It is not advice about your individual child.

Good to know

Questions parents ask

What does individualized dental care mean for my child?

It means we don’t expect every child to need the same experience or the same care. We consider your child’s age, development, comfort, medical and dental history, oral disease risk, personality, and individual needs when planning their visits and making recommendations.

From how we introduce an exam to how often we recommend preventive visits, our approach is shaped around your child.

How do you decide what preventive care my child needs?

We start by getting to know your child. Their health history, dental examination, radiographs (X-rays) when needed, diet, oral hygiene habits, previous cavity experience, and other factors help us determine whether they are at low, moderate, or high risk for developing cavities.

That risk assessment guides the preventive care we recommend — including how often we see your child, when X-rays may be needed, and whether treatments such as fluoride, sealants, or other preventive options may be beneficial.

Because your child’s needs and cavity risk can change as they grow, we reassess over time and adjust their preventive plan along the way.

What if my child is nervous or needs more time at the dentist?

We’ve got you! Comfort with dental care develops differently for every child.

We tailor our approach to your child and focus on building trust over time. Depending on their needs, that may mean moving more slowly, explaining or demonstrating what we’re doing, taking breaks, changing how we communicate, or adjusting what we accomplish during a visit.

Our goal is to create positive experiences while providing safe, appropriate dental care.

Do you care for children with special health care needs?

Yes! Children with special health care needs are welcome at Little Roots. We want to understand your child’s medical history, communication preferences, sensory needs, previous experiences, and anything else that can help us provide a safe and comfortable visit.

Before your child’s first appointment, let us know how we can best support them so we can thoughtfully prepare for their visit.

Can parents stay with their child during appointments?

Yes! Parents are always welcome to join their child during appointments. We believe families are an important part of the dental team, and we want you to feel comfortable asking questions, sharing what you know about your child, and participating in their care.

At the same time, parents don’t have to come back for every visit. Some children feel comfortable visiting with our team independently, and as they grow, this can be a great opportunity to build confidence, independence, and ownership of their oral health. We’ll follow your child’s lead and work together to choose the approach that feels right for your family.
